Well, color me knee-slapped. Just cyber-bumped into one of the most randomly funny commercials I’ve seen in some time, by Australia’s Clemenger Proximity. It’s for White Pages, of which I have nothing but fond memories (as a pre-internet kid, I reached for the user-friendly White Pages over the onerous Yellow Pages every time).

You have to admire a commercial that entertains and surprises from the get-go, and only continues to get better through the finish. Clemenger thoroughly owns this spot, giving each and every detail quirky love. Because it’s the little things that make repeated viewings worthwhile. And what makes the spot even smarter is, it goes straight through the product to do so. Not to mention, I quite enjoy the creepy factor of the main character here.

Albeit slightly reminiscient of a David Byrne concert mixed with Goodby Silverstein & Partners’ brilliant White Gold campaign for California Milk Processors Board (of got milk? fame), Clemenger creates a character and tone all its own for this spot, aptly named “Piano Man.”

Effing top-drawer work, people.
